Diabetes According to Ayurveda: A Disorder, Not a Disease

A diabetes management kit featuring a blood glucose meter, test strips, an insulin syringe, and a lancet device on a white surface. A small blood sample is visible, highlighting diabetes monitoring and care.

Diabetes is often misunderstood as a disease when it is, in fact, a lifestyle disorder. Ayurveda refers to diabetes as "Madhumeha," which arises due to an imbalance in the body’s doshas and metabolic processes.

Root Causes of Diabetes

1.    Lifestyle Changes:

  • Modern conveniences have reduced physical activity while increasing dependency on unhealthy foods.

  • Prolonged sitting and lack of exercise worsen insulin sensitivity.

2.    Excess Protein Intake:

  • Overconsumption of protein creates metabolic waste, overburdening the kidneys and liver.

3.    Fast Thinking Process:

  • Stress and a hyperactive mind disrupt Vata dosha, leading to imbalances in glucose metabolism.

Ayurvedic Approach

Ayurveda emphasizes treating diabetes holistically by addressing both body and mind:

1.    Dietary Changes:

  • Consume bitter foods like neem and karela (bitter gourd) to regulate blood sugar.

  • Avoid processed foods and include whole grains, legumes, and fresh vegetables.

2.    Daily Routine:

  • Wake up early, practice pranayama, and follow a consistent meal schedule to regulate metabolism.

3.    Herbal Remedies:

  • Use herbs like Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre) and Fenugreek to enhance insulin sensitivity.
